Middle-school students in the Riverside School District were given an opportunity to showcase their technological talents on Thursday, Jan. 28, at a computer fair hosted by the high school.

In its fourth year, the volunteer event served as a test-run for a regional competition to be held in March by the Northeast Educational Intermediate Unit (NEIU) No. 19 and Pennsylvania Department of Education at Keystone College. More than 120 students participated by competing for top honors in the following categories: desktop publishing, digital movie, logo design, multimedia, graphic design and Web page design.

“The kids are able to apply things they’ve learned in the classroom,” said Barb Chisdock, Riverside’s technology coordinator.

According to Chisdock, Riverside is one of just a handful of districts to conduct a middle school computer fair in preparation for the regional fair.

“When students get to the high school they are familiar with 21st century embedded learning skills because those skills are being applied in the Riverside School District — creating something with technology, not just demonstrating how to use the technology.”

Student submissions were evaluated by 12 judges from the community including The Times-Tribune, Albright Library, The University of Scranton, Prudential Insurance, Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18, NEIU 19, retired district administrators Joseph Roberts and  Joseph Fialko, administrator Paul Brennan. “We had more than 120 students participate,” Chisdock said.
