If you have a business in Moosic Borough, not recycling is simply not an option — regardless of who the business owner uses as a private waste hauler.

“It’s getting to the point where we needed to find a way to ensure all businesses were recycling in the borough,” said Jane Sterling, borough manager.

Adopted in May, ordinance No. 9, establishes that every business in the borough shall pay a $120 fee to the borough each year for recycling. In addition to the annual fee, Sterling explained that the business then sets out their recycling for weekly pickup.

“The borough needs a viable recycling program,” she explained. “Not only is it important for the environment, not only do we require our residents to recycle, now, because of this ordinance we are legally requiring all business — large and small — to participate in recycling.”

Municipalities throughout the Commonwealth are provided funding from a liquid fuels program that is based on the amount of recycling collected annually.
