Telephone Research Study

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine researchers, in cooperation with hospitals across the state, are conducting the First Baby Study, looking at women's health during and after first delivery. Volunteers are needed to help researchers understand how women's health before having their first baby affects their health and life after delivery.

The First Baby Study is a telephone interview study. Participants are interviewed eight times over the course of three years: once before delivery (when they are at least 34 weeks pregnant) and seven times after delivery (at 1, 6, 12, 24, 30 and 36 months). Women will be asked about their health, pregnancy, delivery expectations and experiences, lifestyle, work, access to health care and their baby's health. All calls take between 20 and 30 minutes and are scheduled at the convenience of the participant (including evenings and weekends).

Compensation is provided after each interview.

Participation requires signing a consent form and an authorization form, which will allow researchers to view both the participant's and the baby's hospital delivery records. All information is kept strictly confidential. To join the study, women must be pregnant with their first baby, carrying only one baby, be between 18-35 years old, English or Spanish speaking, and due before Jan. 30, 2011. This research is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
